Rishi Parashara on Graha Significations

Surya is the soul of all and Shukra signifies the semen. At the higher order, Surya is the Param-atma and Shukra is the Jiva-atma

To understand how the Jiva-atma comes into being and experiences the Gunas we have to understand the following process as described by Rishi Parashara

It is Sri-Shakti, [ Devi Durga or the Kriya Shakti] that impels the Avyakta Vasudeva through the power of Kala, [Devi Kali or the Jnana Shakti] or Time, to come into Vyakta to experience itself in the Lila of desires [Iccha Shakti].

Once the agitation is created, these shakti’s in interaction with the Purusha create the three states of consciousness and then, subsequently binding with them create the Causal, Subtle and the Gross bodies of the Jiva-atma. From the Ahankara the material creation is fructified with the senses and the objects of those senses to experience the Lila.

The interaction of the undifferentiated consciousness represented by the Sun, with the generators and consumers of the Gunas, give us the equations for creation.

The first step is in the emergence of the Gunas and its interaction with undifferentiated consciousness (Purusha or Vasudeva)

  • Sankarshna = Sun (Param-atma) + Saturn (Tamas)

  • Pradyumna = Sun (Param-atma) + Mars (Rajas)

  • Aniruddha = Sun (Param-atma) + Jupiter (Sattva)

The next step are the created Vyuhas interacting with the manifested Gunas

  • Sankarshna + Tamas   = Sun + Saturn + Ketu      = Sun + 29

  • Pradyumbna + Rajas   = Sun + Mars + Mercury   = Sun + 29

  • Aniruddha + Sattava    = Sun + Jupiter + Moon    = Sun + 29

Nir Guna Grahas:

The creation and experience of the creation by the Jiva-atma should total the full lifespan of the Jiva-atma or 120 Years. Thus, we can re write the equation from the Vyuhas interacting with the gunas as the time experienced by the embodied being as

Causal Body + (Subtle Body + (Physical Body)) = 120 Years

or

3 x (Sun + 29) = 120

Sun+29 = 40

Sun = 11

Or
Venus = 18

Tamas Guna Grahas:

We can now rewrite the Inner Planet equation to

Sun + Venus + Ketu = 60 -16 = 44

We know that Sun + Venus is 29 for the Nir Guna

29 + Ketu = 44

Ketu = 15

Solving for Ketu also solves for Saturn

Saturn = 29- Ketu

Saturn = 14

Sattva Guna Grahas:

 Moon is representing Devi Shodashi herself, and gets the root number for the Dasha system as 16 Years [sho + dasha or 6+10 = 16]

Moon = 16 Years

Thus, the solution for Jupiter is

Jupiter + Moon = 29

Jupiter = 13 Years

Rajas Guna Grahas:

For the balance to be maintained on the platform for Devi, the strength of the murtis on the left side must equal to the strength of the murtis on her right side. This is also symbolized with Ganesha and Kartikeya, the two rajas grahas of Mercury [Ganesha] and Mars [Kartikeya] being on either side. This gives us the following equation

Brahma + Vishnu = Maheshwara + Ishvara

For the generation of the Gunas this resolves to

Mars + Jupiter = Saturn + Sun

Mars = Sun +1

Mars = 12

For the consumption of the Gunas this resolves to

Mercury + Moon = Ketu + Venus

Mercury = Venus – 1

Mercury = 17

Final list of durations for the grahas

We can see that what seemed simple on surface, contains the complexity of the mechanics of creation underneath.
