Ashtottari Dasha Durations

The next question that arises on the mechanics of the Dasha system is: why is the duration for each planet assigned as they have been? The key to understanding this is that the planets are governing time in pairs, representing the masculine and feminine components of creation in order that the creation of our physical existence happens.

  • First, Father (Shiva) and Mother (Devi) come together to create the spark that is us.

Sun + Moon = Venus [Shukra] = Y

  • Next, our physical Father and Mother come together to create the body.

Mars (from Mother) + Venus (from Father) = Body = X

  • The Body is Maintained and Destroyed by Jupiter and Saturn. Based on the principal of energy conservation we can write the equation as

Body = Saturn + Jupiter = X

Saturn as the Karaka for Longevity get the Base value of 10

Saturn = 10

  • The essence of what remains before and after the physical body is the learning/knowledge [Mercury] + desires [Rahu]

Mercury + Rahu = X

  • Aggregating all the pairs we get the following Equation where the sum totality is assigned 108 Years for the various reasons that we are aware describing the relative size and structure of the physicality of our solar system

[Sun + Moon] + [Venus + Mars] + [Saturn + Jupiter] + [Mercury + Rahu] = 108 Years

Y + X + X + X = 108

3X + Y = 108

We can even say, that this is the equation for physical Life on the planet!

We can explore the equation to get an idea of what the possible integer resolutions could be:

3X +X-Mars = 108

4X – Mars = 108

4X-108 = Mars

X-27 = Mars/4

Hence X > 27

Also, the following limitation applies such that the equation is not 0 or negative.

X < 36

[as 36 x 3 = 108]

Thus, we have the following bounds for a solution for life on the planet:

27 < X < 36

Now, it takes the planet Saturn ~29 years to go around the sun, and this is the likely the reason for that solution chosen by the rishis for the resolution of the equation given that Saturn is the governor of time on the planet.

This would then resolve the equations to

X = 29

Y = 21

It makes one wonder, if Saturn took longer or shorter how different life would be on earth! We are living in a giant and precise watch with intricate and interconnected moving cogs and gears.

Applying the solution, we get the initial resolutions for the following planets.

Venus = 21

Mars = 8

Saturn = 10

Jupiter = 19

The groupings that we noted earlier of the planets are organized as pairs of even and odd numbers for the masculine and feminine qualities of creation, hence we can write the equation for the groupings as

Sun (Even1) + Moon (Odd1) = 21

Mars (8) + Venus (21) = 29

Saturn (10) + Jupiter (19) = 29

Rahu (Even4) + Mercury (Odd4) = 29

In the series, the even numbers are increasing by the next consecutive value giving the solution of Sun as 6 and Rahu as 12. This gives us the final resolution for all the planets involved as:

Sun (6) + Moon (15) = 21

Mars (8) + Venus (21) = 29

Saturn (10) + Jupiter(19) = 29

Rahu (12) + Mercury (17) = 29

Final Resolution of Ashtottari Dasha Durations

When written in order, we get the final resolution of the durations for each planet aligning to the odd / even organization with an increasing cadence

No longer a mystery to us!

The Ashtottari dasha has deep knowledge encoded within it describing the very nature of how the soul comes and leaves the solar system and places a particularly significant weight on the planet Saturn as the very governor of time on this planet. This supports the growing trend of leveraging the Ashtottari dasha as a more general dasha like the Vimshottari dasha to explain the physical experiences without the rider of Rahu in Kendra / Trines when we are not looking at the dasha for desires but rather for physical experiences of Health, Accidents, Childbirth etc.

We may also posit that a strong Saturn in the chart may help override the conditional nature and bring forth the dasha system as the primary. When we also observe the rules for its application provided such as birth in daytime during Krishna-paksha and in nighttime during Shukla-paksha, we are observing the structure of the masculine-feminine, the yin-yang, of the composition of the Dasha system. The requirement of Rahu in Kendra or Kona (while not being in lagna) is like the Vimshottari Dasha requirement for the Moon. Rahu representing the Maya, the Triloakamohini, Sarvashaparipuraka and the Sarvasamkshobini shakti, of material creation being strong to determine the material results of the Dasha system. We may also posit that these conditions may not be a requirement when applying this Dasha system to observe the non-material experiences for the native

We can take the author’s chart as an example where the Ashtottari dasha is a perfect predictor of the timing of the birth of his 3 children. In the natal chart, Rahu (11.5˚) is in the 6th house in Taurus for a Sagittarius Ascendant (0.5˚) with Jupiter in the ascendant. Exalted Saturn in the 11th house. Thus, it neither satisfies the Kendra/Kona rule from Ascendant by house or degree.

The physical reality of childbirth is perfectly timed with the Ashtottari dasha even when the stipulated conditions for Rahu and Birth in Day/Night for Krishna/Shukla Paksha are not met given a strong Saturn linked to the 5th house.

 May we bow down to the Rishis and Saturn himself to protect and bless our time here on planet earth.
