Application in Rectification through Divisional Charts
A common issue in analyzing a birth chart is to ensure that we are actually reading the appropriate chart for the person. Birth times are recorded with inconsistently if at all and each institutions or health care practitioner’s definition of what a birth time is different. Is the Birth time when the head comes out or is it when the umbilical chord is cut? Is it when the feet come out or is it when the child takes his first breath? Lets us explore if the Pranapada Lagna can help settle the debate and provide a framework for rectification of the birth time down to the under 2 minute window.
BPHS Shloka on Pranapada Lagna Calculation
The Pranapada is a fast moving lagna traveling at 20x the speed of Lagna. The Devata for Pranapada is Lord Garuda. As a devourer of the snakes, Garuda is fighting for the Pranas in the native to survive.
There are 5 primary types of Pranas, namely Udana, Vyana, Prana, Samana and Apana, in the Human body that are responsible for the Intake, Extraction, Movement, and Expulsion of energy though the Nadis or subtle channels. These Pranas map to specific houses in the natural zodiac.
Udana: Upward Movement, Speech: 12th House
Vyana: Distribution, Circulation: 4th House
Samana: Energy Extraction: 6th House
Prana: Inhalation, Intake: 2nd House
Apana: Expulsion: 8th House
The Human body can further be categorized into 5 Layers or Koshas of Annamaya (Food or Gross body), Pranamaya (Prana or Energy Channel body) , Manomaya (Mental Body), Vijnanamaya (Knowledge Body) and the Anandamaya (Bliss Body). These layers of the body are mapped to the 5 groupings of divisional charts in the shodasha varga scheme based on the Tattvas that are responsible for the creation of that Layer.
Agni Tattva: Annamaya Kosha: D 1 – D12
Jala Tattva: Pranamaya Kosha: D16 - D24
Prithvi Tattva: Manomaya Kosha: D 27 – D30
Vavu Tattva: Vijnanamaya Kosha: D40 – D45
Akasha Tattva: Anandamaya Kosha: D60
The Yogic texts teach us that the Pranas are mapped to the specific Chakras in the body as these are the energetic confluence of the Nadi channels carrying the various Pranas. These Chakras then have a corresponding Tattva that it governs:
Udana: Vishuddhi. Akasha
Vyana: Anahatha. Vayu
Samana: Manipura. Agni
Prana: Swadishtahana. Jala
Apana: Mooladhara. Prithvi
Deriving the Technique
The key to unlock the relations between the Chakras, Koshas and the Pranas is that The natural lords of the houses that are mapped to the specific Pranas are the Karakas of the specific Divisional charts within those groupings corresponding to the Tattva of the Chakra the Prana is associated with. This is the hand of god (the karakatva) that is keeping the life in the body. This is Lord Vishnu’s blessing of sustenance manifested in this Loka through his Arudha: Lord Garuda.
To better understand this, let us apply this to one Tattva. For the Prithvi Tattva we can follow the following steps to determine the mapping of the specific Prana to the corresponding Divisional chart
The Prithvi Tattva divisional groupings are from D27 – D30.
The Prithvi chakra is the Moolaadhara Chakra.
The Prana that is mapped to Mooladhara Chakra is the Apana Prana.
Apana Prana is mapped to the 8th house.
The natural lord of the 8th house is Mars.
Mars is the Karaka for the D27 Chart from the Grouping.
Hence, we need to see the Pranapada Lagna in the D27 with respect to the Karaka of the division Mars. The rectification rule is that the Pranapada must be in trines to or 7th from the Karaka of the chart. This is because the Pranapada Lagna in these divisional charts is protecting the specific Prana from failing. Pranapada in Trines to the Karaka Graha protects the Tattva (that the Karaka is in) and the 7th from shows a strong desire to sustain the specific prana.
The Full Solution
Solving for the remaining Tattvas gives us the final mapping as:
Udana: 12th House; Natural Lord Jupiter, Vishuddhi Chakra, Akasha Tattva; D60 [Karaka Jupiter = Sun + Moon]
Vyana: 4th House; Natural Lord Moon, Anahatha Chakra, Vayu Tattva, D40 [Karaka Moon]
Prana: 2nd House; Natural Lord Venus/Moon, Swadishthana Chakra, Jala Tattva, D9 [Karaka Moon]
Samana: 6th House; Natural Lord Mercury; Manipura Chakra, Agni Tattva, D24 [Karaka Mercury]
Apana: 8th House; Natural Lord Mars, Mooladhara Chakra, Prithvi Tattva, D27 [Karaka Mars]
A critical point to note here is that there is an Agni and Jala Tattva flip that occurs as expected from the Bhu Loka Srishti chakra. Also, there is a 6th Prana, the indestructible Brahma Prana, mapping to the 10th house that is not considered here for obvious reasons. Adjusting the birth time to fit all these parameters will give us a rectification within the 2 minute mark as that is the approximate time for D60 to change its Lagna.
Now we can see that what we are doing by applying the rule of Pranapada in the Navamsha trines to the Moon (Karaka for D9) is to ensure that our Prana-Prana, that is responsible to the breath coming in thought the nose (2nd house), is not failing. This is also indicative that by applying this technique, we are setting the time of first breath of the newborn child as the official time of birth for casting the natal chart. Thus solving for the age old question of when to set the time of birth.
We can also verify the applicability of the rectification by observing the Prana Dasha in the [special] Vimshottari Dasha at birth as that should map to the Graha conjoined or lording the Pranapada in the Navamsha as the giver of the first breath.
